The Great Outdoors
Summer is the perfect time to embrace the great outdoors, soak up some sun and get moving. The warmer weather and longer days offer endless opportunities to stay active and boost your overall wellbeing. Whether you’re looking to try new activities, maintain your fitness routine or simply enjoy the season I have some fun and engaging ways to get active this summer.
Try something new - It is set to be a fantastic summer of sport with the Olympics, so many exciting sports to watch and learn about so why not be inspired to give one of them a go.
Hit the parks and trails – Walking, hiking or running in parks or trails is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature while getting a great workout. Find local parks, nature reserves, or scenic routes and explore new paths. The varying terrain not only keeps things interesting but also challenges different muscle groups, enhancing your fitness level.
The 26th July to the 2nd August is Love Parks Week and the goal of this week is to get as many people as possible, young and old, out in the great outdoors to take advantage of their local park. Bristol is a vibrant city and it’s parks offer a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. So why not go out and explore the Clifton Downs, Stoke Park, Blaise Castle, Ashton Court or any of the many others.
Take a dip: Swimming is a low-impact activity that provides a full-body workout. Whether you prefer the ocean, lake or a pool swimming is a refreshing way to stay active. Try incorporating different strokes and water-based exercises to keep things dynamic and fun.
Cycle your way – Cycling is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that also builds strength and endurance. Explore our city and countryside on 2 wheels, discover new routes and enjoy the sights and sounds of summer.
It is cycle to work day on 6th August so if you are able to why not grab your bike and perhaps even a cycle buddy and enjoy a leisurely ride into work.
Outdoor workouts – Outdoor yoga sessions can be incredibly rejuvenating. Practicing yoga in a park or on a beach allows you to connect with nature while improving your flexibility, balance and mental clarity. UWE Bristol Sport has an on-demand programme of workout videos to allow you to exercise anywhere and anytime so why not give one of them a go outdoors. https://uwebristolsport.co.uk/on-demand-classes
Gardening – Gardening is a productive way to stay active and enjoy the summer weather. Planting , weeding, and harvesting vegetables or flowers can be quite the workout. Plus, you will reap the benefits of fresh produce or a beautiful garden space.
Active outings – Incorporate physical activity into your social life by planning outings that involve movement. Go for a picnic that includes a walk, play frisbee or organise beach games. These outings can be both fun and fitness-orientated.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated, wear sun cream, dress appropriately and listen to your body. Don’t overdo it and take regular breaks but most importantly have fun and enjoy our beautiful city!
