A month to celebrate…

October is a busy but great month with lots going on and lots to celebrate, first up it’s Black History Month which is a time to honour the incredible contributions of Black individuals, communities, and cultures to our shared history.

At UWE Bristol, our ultimate goal is to foster a society where Black history and experiences are valued, celebrated, and integrated into mainstream consciousness throughout the entire year, promoting a more inclusive and equitable understanding of history.

Throughout October, UWE Bristol Sport will be celebrating some of our own sporting heroes with spotlight interviews.  These will be showcased through our social media channels @uwebristolsport and @uwebristolmove.

The student’s union is also organising a basketball event at the Centre for Sport on Frenchay Campus on 15th Oct 09:30 -12:00, and also a 7 aside football game on the same day 09:30-12:30.

10th October is World Mental Health Day and this year’s theme is “it’s time to prioritise mental health in the workplace”

The theme highlights the importance of addressing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, for the benefit of people, organisations, and communities.  Physical activity is crucial for many reasons and the benefits of physical activity are widely proven.

Whether you are in a role where you spend much of your day at your computer or a role where you spend it on your feet, it is important to look after your body and wellbeing. Physical activity can have a positive impact on our mental health, in lots of different ways.

  • Physical activity can release feel good endorphins and help boost mood

  • Reduces tension to lead to a more positive outlook.

  • Boosts self-esteem and confidence

  • Increases motivation and focus

  • Helps calm the mind, especially when dealing with difficult situations

  • Reduces loneliness

So why not take a moment in your day to get active and see how much better it can make you feel.  Here are some suggestions:

And finally the 18th October is World Menopause Day, the purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the menopause and the support options available for improving health and wellbeing.

UWE Bristol Sport have a MenoSTRENGTH class as part of their MOVE programme on Mondays 12:15-13:00 at the Centre for Sport, Frenchay. To celebrate World Menopause Day the class on Monday 21st October the class will be FREE for everyone.

MenoSTRENGTH is a strength based class aimed at helping individuals going through the menopause and peri-menopause cope with some of the symptoms they may be experiencing.  Benefits of physical activity for peri-menopause and menopause include:

  • Builds muscles to help protect bones and a falling metabolism

  • Helps maintain bone density

  • Helps with weight management

  • Endorphin release and improved general wellbeing

  • Keeps heart healthy
