Love Parks: Why our green spaces matter more than ever

The Dower House at Stoke Park Estate, otherwise known as the “Yellow Castle”

Why Parks Matter

Parks are more than just patches of grass and trees – they are the lungs of our cities, the playground for children, and the peaceful escapes we all need in a fast-paced world.

Especially over the last few years we have realised how important outdoor spaces are for:

  • 💆 Mental wellbeing – A simple walk in the park can lift your spirits, reduce stress, and give your brain the break it needs.

  • 🤸 Physical Health – From morning jogs to family games, parks are free fitness hubs for people of all ages.

  • 🌻 Wildlife – Parks are home to birds, insects, flowers and more and keep local ecosystems thriving.

  • 🤝 Community – Parks are places where people meet, events are held and memories are made.

Our UWE campuses have some fantastic green spaces around them for you to explore so why not take a lunchtime stroll to get some fresh air and have a break from your desk. Frenchay and Glenside campuses have Stoke Park and Snuff Mills nestled between them and Bower Ashton campus has Ashton Court on it’s doorstep.  Wherever you are in Bristol, there are some beautiful parks and green spaces for you to enjoy.

Love Parks Week – 25th July to 3rd August

Every year, Love Parks Week gives us the perfect excuse to slow down, step outside, and reconnect with the green spaces that bring so much joy, health and beauty to our lives. Whether it’s your local park such as Ashton Court, a hidden woodland trail, or a quiet riverside path, these natural retreats play a vital role in our wellbeing and community life.
